Professor Cliff Shearman is a Professor of Vascular Surgery within Medicine at the University of Southampton. Professor Shearman qualified from Guys Hospital Medical School London University and trained in vascular surgery in Birmingham. He was appointed as a senior lecturer/consultant vascular surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in 1990. In 1994 he moved to Southampton as an NHS Consultant Vascular Surgeon and in 1999 was appointed to the Chair of Vascular Surgery at the University of Southampton.

Professor Shearman is a vascular surgeon in a busy vascular unit that undertakes most vascular and endovascular treatments of arterial and venous disease. The unit serves a local population of 900,000 people. His research program is largely directed at determining factors that promote the progression of vascular disease, particularly in diabetes. These include environmental, genetic and hemodynamic factors, and how they might be modified to improve clinical outcomes.

Professor Shearman is Associate Medical Director for R and D in Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust. He was on the Council and Chairman of the Training and Education Committee of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and President of the Society (2009-10). He was appointed the head of the Wessex Post Graduate School of Surgery in 2007.
