Clemens Birgelen MD, PhD

Dr. von Birgelen was trained as a cardiologist and interventional cardiologist at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam in the Netherlands and at Essen University in Germany. In 1998 he defended a PhD-thesis in intravascular ultrasound at Erasmus University. Since 2003 he works in Enschede at the Thoraxcentrum Twente — a Dutch high-volume center for cardiac interventions.

Dr. von Birgelen is the Director of Cardiovascular Research and Co-Director of the Department of Cardiology at Thoraxcentrum Twente. In 2007 he was appointed as Professor of Interventional Cardiology at the University of Twente in Enschede. His main research interests are the invasive treatment of coronary artery disease, the evaluation of novel stents and scaffolds, and intracoronary diagnostic techniques. Dr. von Birgelen is the author of various scientific medical publications and the principal investigator of several randomized clinical studies, such as TWENTE, DUTCH PEERS, BIO-RESORT, and BIONYX.
