Claudio Viscoli PhD

Dr. Claudio Viscoli, born in 1949, has graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Genoa in 1974, before obtaining postgraduate qualifications in Infectious Disease and Pediatrics. From 1974 to 1992 he worked in the Pediatric Infectious Disease field at the Gaslini Children Hospital in Genoa, where he became Associate Professor of Infectious Disease. Prof. Viscoli then moved to the adult field in 1992, when he became chief of the Infectious Disease Unit at the National Institute for Cancer Research in Genova, where he stayed until 2005. He is now Full Professor of Infectious Disease at the University of Genoa, and Chief of the Infectious Disease Division ofthe IRCCS A.O.U. SAN MARTINO-IST in Genoa, Italy. He is also Director of the Postgraduate School of Infectious Disease of the University of Genova, and Coordinator of the PhD School of Health Sciences of the Department of Health Sciences at the same University, where he run the curriculum “Infectious Disease”. Dr. Viscoli has been Visiting Professor for 6 months in 2003 at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA, USA.

He published more than 350 articles on peer-review journals and authored several book chapters and monographs in Italian, English and Spanish, mainly in the field of infection in immunocompromised hosts, including the chapter on empirical therapy of febrile neutropenia in the 6th , 7th and 8th edition of the Principle and Practice of Infectious Diseases textbook (Mandell, Douglas & Bennett). His h-index is around 55 (Scopus) and the Impact Factor almost 1500. He is reviewer for the major Scientific Journals in the field of Infectious Disease. Dr. Viscoli has been Chairman of the International Antimicrobial Therapy Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, as well as, for many years, member of the Steering Committee of the Infectious Disease Study Group of the same research organization. In addition, he has been initially member, then President-elect, President and Past-President of the Immunocompromised Host Society (ICHS), Founder and President of the European Study Group on Infections in the Immunocompromised Host (ESGICH) of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infection (ESCMID),member of the steering committee of the Italian Federation for Animal and Human Mycology, member of the steering Committee of the Italian Society for Infectious Disease. He is now President of the Italian Society for Anti-Infective Therapy and fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America. In addition, he is consultant for the Scientific Advisory Board for Anti-Infectives of the Committee for Human Medicinal Products (CHMP) of the EMA, the European Medicine Agency.
