Clare Futter PhD from the University of Glasgow, she moved to Imperial College, London where she used electron microscopy in the laboratory of Colin Hopkins to study the trafficking of growth factor receptors in cancer cells. Since setting up her own research group at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology in 2001 her membrane trafficking studies have extended into retinal pigment epithelial cells where, in collaboration with Miguel Seabra from Imperial College, we are investigating the regulation of melanosome biogenesis and movement, phagocytosis of photoreceptor outer segments and the role of membrane traffic defects in retinal degeneration.
