Prof. Dr. Cihan Ay completed his training as a specialist in internal medicine and hematology and oncology at the Division of Haematology and Haemostaseology, Department of Internal Medicine I (Medical University of Vienna/Vienna General Hospital), habilitated in Haemostaseology in 2011 and has been a professor in the Department of Haematology at the Medical University of Vienna since September 2021. He heads the Hemophilia Outpatient Clinic, the Program Directorates for Thrombophilia (Thrombosis Research) and Hemophilia and, as head, the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group.

He gained international experience during study visits to the Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, Netherlands (2007), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, USA (2016-2017), and the Angelo Bianchi Bonomi Haemophilia and Thrombosis Center in Milan, Italy (2019). Prof. Ay was a visiting professor at I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University), Moscow, Russia, from 11/2018 to 12/21.

His scientific focus is on blood coagulation (hemophilia/congenital blood coagulation disorders) and thrombosis research as well as anticoagulation. He is the principal or co-investigator of prospective cohort studies such as the Vienna Cancer and Thrombosis Study (CATS) to investigate the etiology and risk factors for thrombosis in cancer, a prospective registry with a biobank of patients with atrial fibrillation, a population-based cohort study of dialysis patients in Vienna (VIVALDI) to investigate thromboembolic complications and bleeding and a prospective study of patients with atrial fibrillation. bleeding and a prospective study of patients with acute deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism (BACH-VTE). Prof. Ay also acts as principal investigator of clinical studies (phase I to IV) in the field of thrombosis, anticoagulation, and hemophilia (congenital blood clotting disorders).

Prof. Ay is a member of guideline committees and consensus groups for the development of treatment guidelines on venous thromboembolism (focus: cancer-associated thrombosis) and hemophilia. He is active in various functions in professional societies and scientific journals both nationally and internationally. A particular passion of his is teaching students on clinical topics in the field of hematology and hemostaseology as well as supervising diploma and PhD students in the PhD programs at the Medical University of Vienna.
