Dr. Defilippi is the Director of BioCore Laboratories and Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute. As Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs, Dr. deFilipi oversees all of the site-based cardiovascular research at the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute and directs the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Training Program. Dr. deFilippi also continues to pursue an active research career with cardiac diagnostics with the publication of multiple high impact publications. He has served as the principal investigator and adjudication chairman for several multicenter cardiac biomarker approval studies.

Regionally, he has been able to leverage the strength of the Inova Health System in the Northern Virginia area to introduce innovative methods for clinical trial recruitment to encourage participation at both the investigator and participant level to take advantage of both the diversity of the region and the spectrum of patients cared for in the system, from the critically ill to the primary care ambulatory setting. He is committed to BioCore Laboratories not only providing excellence in clinical laboratory testing but also providing access to diverse clinical populations critical to the successful development and validation of novel and established in-vitro diagnostic assays.

Prior to arrival at Inova in 2016, Dr. Defilippi was at the University of Maryland since 2000 as an Associate Professor of Medicine where he collaborated closely with Dr. Robert Christenson in the area of in-vitro-diagnostics research. In addition to his Inova responsibilities, Dr. Defilippi is an editorial board member for the journal Circulation and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He is a senior editorial board member for JACC: Heart Failure and is an associate editor of the Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine.
