Professor Christopher Dorries OBE qualified as a solicitor in May 1977. He worked for Prosecuting Authorities in Yorkshire dealing with all types of criminal case, after which he transferred to private practice in 1984, undertaking a wide range of legal work but primarily serious cases in the criminal courts. Appointed HM Coroner for South Yorkshire (West) in November 1991. In 1994 he was appointed to the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the appointment of Magistrates for the Sheffield area. In 2007 he was appointed specialist adviser to the Commons Parliamentary Select Committee scrutinising proposals for the then new Coroners Bill. He is author of the key text-book on Coroner’s Courts: a guide to law and practice which was first published in April 1999.
