Dr. Bono is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Orthopedic Spine Service at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). Dr Bono is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery, having recently recertified in 2013.

Dr. Bono earned his M.D. from SUNY Downstate in New York, followed by completion of orthopaedic residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Medical School. During his residency, Dr. Bono received a number of honors, including a clinical excellence award, a teaching award bestowed by his peers, and two research awards. Dr. Bono was a leader within his residency, being one of two administrative Chief Residents in his year. To complete his education, Dr. Bono studied spinal surgery at the University of California in San Diego under the direction of Steven Garfin, MD, which he completed in 2002.

Dr. Bono has established himself as a true leader in the field of spinal surgery. He was elected 2nd Vice President of the North American Spine Society (NASS) in 2013, slated to be the President of this society from 2015-2016. Importantly, NASS is the leading spinal organization in the world, representing nearly 10,000 spine practitioners from around the world. It is a multi-disciplinary society, representing the best of both surgical and nonsurgical practices. During his tenure at NASS, Dr. Bono has led a number of ground-breaking initiatives, including the first ever society-produced Coverage Recommendations, launched in Spring of 2014, as well as leading the Evidence-Based Clinical Guidelines Committee. Dr. Bono is a recognized leader in various other societies, chairing important committees within the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the International Society of the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), and the International Society for the Advancement of Spinal Surgery.
