Mr Chris Cunningham was appointed as Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in Oxford in 2000. Following postgraduate experience in Edinburgh and London he was awarded an MD for research into the genetic basis of colorectal carcinogenesis. Training in Colorectal Surgery was gained in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Paris.

Since becoming a consultant he has developed his interests in the management of colorectal cancer and pelvic floor disorders, particularly through laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and transanal endoscopic microsurgery for tumours of the rectum (www.temsurgery.co.uk). He is the lead clinician for management of colorectal cancer in Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals. He has expertise in the management of complex and recurrent abdominal wall hernia through keyhole and traditional surgical techniques. He is also a member of the Clinical Services Committee of the Association of Coloproctology and a Regional Surgical Advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

He lectures and teaches in colorectal surgery at home and abroad and has over 60 publications and book chapters. He has an active research interest and is the principal investigator for Oxford in four national randomised trials in colorectal surgery. Mr Cunningham works within the Oxford Colorectal Partnership with Mr Oliver Jones and Mr Ian Lindsey to provide comprehensive, high quality, sub-specialist care within the fields of general and colorectal surgery.
