Christopher David Byrne MBBCh, PhD, FRCPath, FRCP

Professor Byrne trained as a physician and clinical scientist in the UK and USA; at Cardiff, Cambridge, and Stanford Universities undertaking a PhD studying liver lipid metabolism. Professor Byrne is a Metabolic Physician at University Hospital Southampton, with particular expertise in dyslipidaemias, metabolic liver disease, and type 2 diabetes; and is currently the Principal Investigator at the National Institute for Health and Care Research, Southampton Biomedical Research Centre. Professor Byrne was the UK Diabetologist advisor to the NICE NAFLD Guidelines (ng49) in 2016; the recipient of the Dorothy Hodgkin Award in 2012 and the Banting Memorial Lecture Award in 2022 from Diabetes UK. The Banting Memorial Lecture is the highest award bestowed by Diabetes UK. The lecture is awarded to a person internationally recognized for their eminence in the field of diabetes. 

In 2022 Professor Byrne was a Clarivate 'highly cited researcher' (top 0.1% of all global scientists) and in 2023 was ranked 5th globally by Expertscape for research in NAFLD over the previous decade. Professor Byrne’s research focuses on different aspects of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): including etiology, pathogenesis, consequences, and treatment, and has published 470+ peer-reviewed publications, various book chapters, and three books. Original research utilizes large national and international datasets with collaborators from around the globe, randomized controlled trials, and experimental medical approaches.
