Christof Dame, born in 1967, studied human medicine at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn from 1987 to 1994. During this time he completed his doctoral thesis on the subject of "Investigations into the physiology and pathophysiology of erythropoietin in premature and full-term newborns" at the Department of Neonatology at the University Children's Hospital in Bonn, where he later worked as a research assistant.

From 1999 to 2003 he was a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation and later worked at the Clinic for Neonatology and the Institute for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Florida with a scholarship from the Howard Hughes Institute. In 2003 he was appointed junior professor at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Since 2009 Christof Dame has been deputy director of the Clinic for Neonatology and professor of pediatrics with a focus on molecular neonatology.
