Christian Toso is studying medicine in Geneva and training in general abdominal surgery in Switzerland. He then continued, for 3 years, a specialization in liver and pancreas surgery and transplantation at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. Focusing his research on islet transplantation and on liver transplantation, he also obtained a PhD during this stay. Nowadays a senior associate physician in visceral surgery and transplantation at the HUG Department of Surgery, Christian Toso also directs a clinical and basic research group whose main themes are surgery and liver transplantation, mainly for cancer. He is also very active in the teaching of surgery, and co-head of the CMA of Surgery.
