Dr McKinlay graduated in Medicine from The University of Auckland and completed general paediatric training in Auckland, followed by subspecialist training in neonatology in Melbourne. His PhD, undertaken at the Liggins Institute, investigated the long-term effects of repeat antenatal glucocorticoid treatment for preterm birth on risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disease. He combines clinical neonatology with perinatal research, focusing on interventions to improve long-term metabolic health and neurodevelopmental outcomes. He joined the Liggins Institute in 2014 and was jointly appointed to the Department of Paediatrics in 2015.
