Dr. Boutell graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Biological Sciences from the University of the West of England, UK. During his undergraduate study he worked in a cystic fibrosis lab in America, under the supervision of Professor Jeffrey Whitsett (University of Cincinnati, Ohio). In 2000, Dr. Boutell completed a PhD in Virology at the MRC Virology Unit (University of Glasgow) within Dr Frazer Rixon's lab.

His PhD focused on the dynamics of protein folding during HSV-1 capsid assembly. Working within an Institute dedicated to virology research led him to an appreciation for the complexity and diversity of virus host-cell interactions. Upon completion of his PhD, he took up a Human Frontiers post-doctoral fellowship position within Professor Roger Everett's group (also within the MRC Virology Unit) to further pursue these research interests.
