Charlotte Ringsted trained as an anesthetist in Denmark and pursued medical education full time in the 1990s, taking first a masters degree and then a PhD, both at Maastricht University. She established a clinical skills lab in Copenhagen University Hospital in 1995, and served as leader of the Postgraduate Medical Institute for Copenhagen Hospital Corporation 1997-2004. Since that time until 2013 she was director of the Centre for Clinical Education, University of Copenhagen and Capital Region, Denmark.

She is a prolific scholar and has presented her work extensively internationally. She is also a very sought-after teacher with a particular focus on graduate supervision and conducting research in medical education. She has played leadership roles in many national and international organizations including the Association for Medical Education in Europe. Her current areas of research are: Training and assessment of clinical skills in both clinical and virtual reality/simulation-based settings; workplace-based development and assessment of competence; inter-professional teamwork; and the role of students and patients as teachers.
