Emeritus Professor Charles A Marsden (b 1943) read Zoology at the University of London before going to the University of Southampton (MSc in Biochemical Pharmacology (1967), PhD in invertebrate neuropharmacology (1969) and DSc (1986)). Following three years at the University of Bergen (Norway) he worked at the Institute of Neurology, London with Professor Gerald Curzon where his interest in serotonergic systems developed. In 1978 he moved to the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Nottingham. He obtained a Wellcome Trust Senior Lectureship in 1981 and subsequently became Professor of Neuropharmacology (1986).

His main research interests were on the relationship between neurotransmitter function and behaviour and their importance to mental disorders. He was President of the British Association of Psychopharmacology (BAP) (2000-2002) and of the International Society for Serotonin Research (ISSR) (2006-2008). He was awarded the J.R. Vane medal by the BPS in 2002 for contributions to neuropharmacology, made an Honorary Member of the SSRI (2012), given a Lifetime Achievement award by the BAP (2013) and made an Honorary Member of the BPS in 2014.
