Dr Charles Livingstone is Deputy Head of the Department of Health Social Science,School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University. His background is in health program evaluation, health program funding system development and implementation, and in critical gambling studies. Charles’s main research interests are in critical analysis of equity in health care funding systems, and of technological and other systemic aspects of electronic gambling machine (EGM) gambling.

His critique of existing regimes of gambling regulation and the public health impact of EGMs in the Australasian context has resulted in significant media interest. He is very interested in the application of continental social theory as a perspective to develop better understanding of political processes and their relationship to public health policy.

Charles is a co-convenor of the annual Dangerous Consumption colloquia, having inaugurated the event in 2001. He has undertaken numerous research projects and consultancies for state and federal government departments and non-government organisations, and is an International Editorial Board member of the journal International Gambling Studies. Charles is a regular contributor to public debate via popular media, in particular around issues such as the social impact of EGMs, and on private health insurance.
