Charles Austen Angell, FIDSA, is the founder of Modern Edge, Inc., a strategic industrial design firm based in Portland, OR. Modern Edge is globally known for original work in the fields of health and wellness, mobility, home products and experiential environments. Angell served a two-year term as Chair of IDSA's Board of Directors and was an original trustee for the Design Foundation, a public charity in support of design education and social responsibility. He is an active board member of the Design Foundation today.

Angell oversees all projects, from client contact through human factors research, design refinement, product and program management, market positioning and customer experience. Previously, he served as director of design research and innovation for Intel Corporation. His independent design experience spans projects in Europe, the Americas, Southeast Asia, Africa and Australia. Prior projects include work with John Deere, Harley Davidson, SC Johnson, Medtronic, BMW, Gillette, General Motors, Ford, St. Jude Medical, Sunbeam and many others.

Angell’s published works include articles in INNOVATION magazine and other journals of design. As an active supporter of design education, he has also been a guest lecturer at Purdue University, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, the University of Southern Illinois-Carbondale, Portland State University and the Art Institute of Portland.
