Charles Ahene, MD, is a Staff Physician in the Anesthesiology Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Dr. Ahene provides expert anesthesia care to patients undergoing complex heart operations and also practices other areas of anesthesia, including anesthesia for vascular surgery, organ transplantation, and general anesthesia. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Ahene worked in several tertiary medical centers and teaching hospitals. He started his career as an Assistant professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, US, where he trained resident physicians and also served as the Director of Cardiac Anesthesia.
Following his time in Mississippi, Dr. Ahene moved to Saudi Arabia, where he served as a consultant anesthesiologist at the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh. He subsequently relocated to Abu Dhabi, where he was involved in the establishment of the adult and pediatric cardiac surgical services at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City.
Dr. Ahene is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesia. He is also board-certified in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography by the American Board of Echocardiography. He holds medical licenses from the States of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, and Kentucky in the US and is a member of the International Anesthesia Research Society and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesia. He earned his degree from the University of Ghana Medical School in Accra, Ghana, and completed his residency in both Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC He later completed a fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio.
