Dr. Charles Alexander Leath III, MD, MSPH, is a distinguished gynecologic oncologist, Professor, and Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine. He also serves as a senior scientist at the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he contributes to advancing research and clinical care in women’s cancers.
Dr. Leath earned his undergraduate degree from The Citadel and his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed both his residency in obstetrics and gynecology and fellowship in gynecologic oncology at UAB, where he has remained a key leader in academic medicine.
Clinically, Dr. Leath specializes in the treatment of gynecologic cancers, including cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancers. He is recognized for his expertise in complex surgical procedures and innovative therapies, including immunotherapy approaches aimed at improving outcomes for patients with advanced or treatment-resistant disease.
His research focuses on clinical trials and translational research, particularly in developing and optimizing new treatments for gynecologic malignancies. He has played a leadership role in national and institutional research efforts, serving as Chair of the NRG Cervix Committee, contributing to clinical trial operations, and participating in guideline development for ovarian cancer treatment.
