Chantal Darquenne is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). She earned her PhD degree in Applied Sciences from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium). She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of Physiology at UCSD where she still holds her current position. Dr. Darquenne studies the deposition and dispersion of inhaled aerosols to gain greater insight into the mechanisms involved in particle transport in the lung. Her major research contributions are in 1) the study of aerosol inhalations in humans in altered gravity, 2) the development of numerical models that simulate the transport and deposition of aerosols in the lung, 3) the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging to measure aerosol deposition in animal models, 4) the effect of lung disease such as COPD on both regional and overall aerosol deposition, and 5) upper airway dynamics during breathing and its effect on aerosol transport.
