Cathryn M. Clary, MD is the Head of Patient Affairs for Development in the Chief Medical Office, Novartis. In this newly created role, Cathryn will be responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Patient Declaration throughout global development. From the time she arrived at Novartis three and a half years ago as Head, US Medical and Chief Scientific Officer, Cathryn has had a focus on the patient.

She sponsored the Voice of the Patient initiative which enabled a greater patient voice in US medical and regulatory activities. Most recently, she played a key role in the realignment of US Clinical Development and Medical Affairs (CDMA ) enabling even greater patient and customer focus.

Cathryn received her MD degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and her psychiatric residency training at the University of Pennsylvania. She practiced psychiatry for 13 years in Delaware, staying actively engaged in clinical research through her membership in the University of Pennsylvania Psychopharmacology Research group, and serving as local PI on multiple Phase II to IV trials in depression and anxiety indications, leading to the approval of multiple agents.

After receiving an MBA degree from the University of Delaware, Cathryn joined Pfizer in 1996 as Medical Director on the Depression and Anxiety Disease Management team, providing medical strategic leadership and support for sertraline, a leading antidepressant/anxiolytic medicine at the time. Cathryn’s 13- year career at Pfizer was one of continued advancement and in her last four years, she served as Head, US Medical, supporting a portfolio of 22 products, then as Head, External Medical Affairs, in which she led a group focused on Academic Medical Center collaborations, as well as collaborations with other external medical customers. After leaving Pfizer, Cathryn took a role as Head, US Clinical Development and Medical Affairs at Ipsen, a French biopharmaceutical company, for three years, before joining Novartis.
