Dr Tuleu’s recent presentation at the APS PharmSci conference entitled ‘Medicines for children: A taste for improving young patients’ experience’ looked at the key science underpinning paediatric formulations. It provided an excellent opportunity to highlight the need for better medicines for children, present challenges and strategies in place by linking to on-going works that she is currently involved in.

Some of these projects include the acceptability of paediatric medicines study including the palatability assessment in vivo and in vitro; the Accelerating Paediatric Formulation Development consortium, which is an open UK innovation R&D collaborative project between large UK pharmaceutical companies, academia and technology suppliers that aims to generate a structured approach to designing age-appropriate medicines for children and technology for predicting their quality and performance, and is supported by a grant from Innovate UK.

Dr Tuleu is also the lead for The European Paediatric Formulation Initiative (EuPFI), a consortium working in a pre-competitive way on paediatric drug formulations with members from academia, hospital pharmacies, pharmaceutical industry (Innovators, Generics, CROs, Specials and Excipient Manufacturers) with European Medicine Agency (EMA) as an observer.
