I am originally from Quinlan, Texas, a small town in northeast Texas--about 45 minutes from Dallas. My mother instilled a deep desire for education at an early age. I initially said I wanted to become a cafeteria worker like her; she said "absolutely not--you're going to college". So I did. I became the first in my family to graduate with a bachelor's degree when I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman's University in 2006.

My motivation to become a nurse is deeply personal. In 1983, at the age of 17 months, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I vowed from the time I was four years old that I would become a nurse so I could help children like me. So I did. After graduating from TWU, I took a slight detour by working in Medical ICU at Baylor University Medical Center of Dallas. From there, I went on to work on the Diabetes/Endocrinology and Cystic Fibrosis unit at Children's Medical Center of Dallas--the hospital where I was diagnosed. I then became a Certified Diabetes Educator in 2010 while working at 'Specially For Children Endocrinology clinic in Austin. Currently, I still provide diabetes education in my capacity as Nurse Educator for Austin ISD.
