Dr. Carter Lebares is a gastrointestinal surgeon at UCSF Medical Center who specializes treating add gastrointestinal disease, particularly of the esophagus and stomach, minimally invasive surgery, robotics and surgical endoscopy. This includes treatments for reflux disease, hiatal hernia, obesity, early esophageal or gastric cancer, esophageal motility disorders, hernias, gallbladder disease and some biliary disease. Dr. Lebares received her medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed her surgical residency at UCSF. She is also a member of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Lebares received the Haile T. Debas Surgical Resident Teaching Award in 2013, the Gaviser-Hayes award for compassion in surgery in 2013 and the Metropolitan Mount Sinai award for future excellence in 2008. She was awarded a $10,000 Northwestern Health Sciences University funding grant for the creation of the first integrated (complementary and traditional) medicine teaching clinic in the country in 2007.
Dr. Lebares, who is Director of the UCSF Center for Mindfulness in Surgery, has 20 years of personal practice in mindfulness meditation and self-directed learning regarding stress, cognition and resilience. She has been accepted to the prestigious Mind and Life Summer Research Institute for 2017 which is an annual think tank for advancing the evidence-based understanding of contemplative practices and translation of these to the real world. Dr. Lebares has taken Mindfulness Teacher Training for Physicians through the University of Rochester and is a graduate of the Teaching Scholars Program in Medical Education at UCSF.
