Caroline Smith PhD, MSc, BSc

Prof. Caroline Smith is an experienced clinical research and acupuncture practitioner. She brings expertise in relation to acupuncture research and clinical skills in relation to women’s health and reproductive health. She has a background in evidence based research in relation to acupuncture and other complementary therapies and the integration of Chinese medicine and biomedical research protocols, predominately in the areas of women’s health. She has extensive experience in evidence based research including the design, conduct of randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews. Caroline currently supervises eight higher degree students, and holds appointments on the University of Western Sydney Committees including Research Studies.

Caroline has received funding from National Health and Medical Research Council for four project grants over the last ten years. These include two grants as CIA examining the effects on acupuncture on the induction of labour for post term pregnancies, and acupuncture to improve the live birth rate for women undergoing IVF. Caroline has published over 70 peer reviewed articles in peer reviewed medical and complementary medicine journals.

She regularly presents her work at national and international conferences, and her research has influenced clinical practice through the inclusion in clinical practice guidelines in Australia and overseas. Caroline is on the Advisory Board of the Complementary Medicine Field, and editorial board member for the Menstrual Disorders and Sub-Fertility for the Cochrane Collaboration.
