Dr. Carol Herbert is Professor Emerita, Family Medicine at Western University and Adjunct Professor UBC School of Population and Public Health. She is Senior Associate at In-Source, a Vancouver-based consulting company that applies a complex adaptive systems lens to health care issues. She was formerly Dean of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western (1999-2010); Head of the UBC Department of Family Practice (1988-98); founding Head of the UBC Division of Behavioural Medicine; and a co-founder of the UBC Institute of Health Promotion Research and the Sexual Assault Assessment Service in Vancouver.

She has been a leader in inter-professional education and collaborative practice, women’s health and mentorship of academic women. She has chaired and served on task forces on health policy and professional education. Her research foci have included family violence and sexual assault, clinical health promotion and patient-physician decision-making in primary care, complementary and alternative medicine, and participatory research on health issues in aboriginal communities, including diabetes and health impact of contaminants. She is internationally known for her leadership in primary care research introducing a participatory research approach, and co-authored Guidelines for Participatory Research in Health Promotion which are widely used.

She is a founding Fellow and Past-President of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and an International Member of the Institute of Medicine, U.S. National Academies of Science. She is a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and holds honorary fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal Australian College of General Practice.
