Carol L. Steltenkamp MD, MBA, FAAP

Dr. Carol Steltenkamp is the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) at the University of Kentucky and a practicing Professor of Pediatrics. Dr. Steltenkamp is active in the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), serving in multiple leadership roles throughout the years. She is currently the chair of the HIMSS International Board of Directors.

She was instrumental in the development of UK HealthCare’s data warehouse, a system incorporating dynamic data mining capabilities and maintaining a pleasant and highly functional user interface. Dr. Steltenkamp is the Executive Director of the Kentucky Regional Extension Center which was founded in 2010 with its original funding from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT.

The Kentucky REC is a self-sustaining Health Information Technology staff resource used by over 4000 Kentucky health professionals in the adoption, implementation and “Meaningful Use” of an Electronic Health Record (EHR). Dr. Steltenkamp is on the frontline of EHR implementation throughout the Commonwealth, and has previously led successful, nationally-recognized EHR implementations across multiple sites of an integrated delivery network. Dr. Steltenkamp has conducted research related to medication error reporting and clinical biomedical informatics.

Dr. Carol Steltenkamp was born in Covington, KY. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Xavier University with a B.S. in Natural Science. Next, she completed her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine and then graduated with honors from the University of Kentucky in Pediatric Medicine. She did her internship in pediatrics at the University of Kentucky and later joined as a full-time faculty member.

She completed her M.B.A. with a healthcare focus in 2000. Dr. Steltenkamp has received numerous honors including: Best Doctors National Award annually since 2007; AMDIS Physician Award for Excellence and Outstanding Achievement in Applied Medical Informatics in 2012 and the MediStar Hall Render Leadership in Healthcare Award in 2014.
