Carol Kirkwood RN

Carol Kirkwood, RN has been the Clinical Manager of the OR at Health Sciences North, Sudbury, Ontario for the past 10 years. The OR has 17 suites and is a Regional Referral Center serving a population base of approximately 500,000. Carol has held a number of positions in Acute Care Teaching Hospitals in Toronto, On, as well as in Sudbury. She also holds a Masters Certificate in Health Care Management from the Schulich School of Business as well as Legal Nurse Consultant Certification.

Prior to returning to acute care, Carol worked in the private sector and became National Operations Manager for a large Personal Injury Disability Management Company, with offices across this country. As a Legal Nurse Consultant concurrent to her OR Administrative position, she reviews files where nurses have been named in a malpractice lawsuit, providing recommendations to the Legal community regarding whether or not a standard of care has been breached. Carol will share today the experiences at HSN of implementing a debrief in the OR immediately following a critical event, the outcomes, benefits, and impact on culture.
