Carlo Colosimo is currently chairman of the Department of Neurology, Santa Maria University Hospital of Terni, Italy. He graduated from the Medical School of the Catholic University in Rome, Italy. After undertaking a residency in neurology at the same University, he has been a post-doctoral research fellow in movement disorders at the National Hospital for Neurology in London, UK. He has served as a consultant neurologist and professor at the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry, the Sapienza University of Rome from 1993 to 2015. In this capacity, he has been involved in several trials concerning therapeutic agents for various neurological disorders and has contributed to the undergraduate and teaching program of that department.

He is the author of more than 250 original scientific papers, 190 of which are in peer-reviewed international journals, and the editor of two textbooks on movement disorders. He also serves as a manuscript reviewer for several journals and he was a member of the editorial board of the journal Movement Disorders; he currently serves as associate editor on the editorial boards of the journals Parkinson's disease, Basal Ganglia, and European Journal of Medical Research. He is also co-editor of Moving Along, the newsletter of the Movement Disorders Society. He is frequently invited to give lectures at major neurological congresses (WFN, MDS, EAN) around the world. Clinical research activity has been focused on Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, with a particular interest in infusion therapies for the management of advanced Parkinson's disease, use of different serotypes of botulinum toxin for the management of dystonia, genetic, epidemiological, and clinical aspects of atypical parkinsonian syndromes.
