Carlo Chizzolini graduated in medicine and surgery from the University of Parma in 1979, where he specialized in clinical immunology and allergology. He also obtained a doctorate in medicine from the University of Geneva in 1986. He then worked for several years on malaria in Gabon and at the Centers for Disease Control (United States). Returning to Geneva in 1994, he joined the Clinical Immunology and Allergology Department of the HUG, where he has been Associate Associate Physician since 2003.

His clinical and research interests focus on autoimmune diseases including scleroderma, vasculitis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. His laboratory has for many years been involved in research into the immunological mechanisms responsible for inflammation and fibrosis, and he is a pioneer in the field of the influence of T lymphocytes on the production of the extracellular matrix by fibroblasts. He is also the coordinator of the Swiss Group for the cohort study of systemic lupus erythematosus (SSCS) and participates in the European network for the molecular reclassification of systemic autoimmune diseases (PRECISESADS). Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine in 2010, he was appointed Full Professor in May 2016.
