Carlo Bettocchi MD, FECSM

Prof. Carlo Bettocchi has been a specialist in Urology since 1994 and became a professor of Urology in 2008. He is currently the Director of the Andrology and External Genital Surgery Departmental Unit and Associate Professor of Urology at the “Ospedali Riuniti” University Hospital in Foggia. From 1995 to 2021 he worked in the Department of Urology, Andrology and Kidney Transplantation at the Policlinico – University of Bari. He was largely involved in the diagnostic and surgical process of urological patients. He became Head of the Andrology Section of this urology department in January 1996 and since 2017 he has held the role of director of the “Functional Urology Unit”. This unit has become a “European Teaching Center for penile prosthesis implants” since 2018 thanks to his great and recognized expertise and experience in this field. He has also been working in Geneva, Switzerland since 2015 in collaboration with the “Male Health International Surgical Center” (MHISC) where he performs reconstructive surgery of the male genitalia. He is also a “Visiting Professor” in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with a work license since 2013.

His research and clinical career has included several experiences in European urology departments, such as Maastricht University Hospital, Holland, with Prof. R. Janknegt (1991), Middlesex Hospital UCLH and King's College Hospital, UK, with JP Pryor and DJ Ralph (1992-1995 and 2004-2008). He is an “Honorary Consultant” of the University College London Hospital NHS Trust (UK). In 2004-2005 he was also “Honorary Senior Lecturer” of University College London Hospital NHS Trust (UK) and has been accredited by the Medical Association of England (GMC) since 1992.

Prof. Bettocchi has produced, as an author, more than 200 publications in national and international journals, and has also written several chapters of national and international books. He is a reviewer of numerous international scientific journals and has been a “Principal Investigator” on several protocols in the Uro-Andrology sector. He was a member of the committee of the European Society of Urology (EAU) for the drafting and updating of the guidelines on “Male Hypogonadism” (2011-2017) and is now a member of the EAU committee for the guidelines on “Sexual and Reproductive Health” since 2018.

Bettocchi is past president of the European Society of Sexual Medicine (ESSM). He is also a member of the executive committee of the Andrology Section of the European Society of Urology (ESAU) and the Italian National Observatory on Gender Dysphoria (ONIG).

His ultra-specialized uro-andrological areas are male sexual dysfunction, infertility and gender dysphoria. He is an internationally renowned surgeon in this sector and is an “opinion leader” in this field in our country and internationally. He directs and manages an andrological clinic at the Policlinico di Bari where patients arrive who complain of problems of erectile dysfunction, penile deformity (curvature, small penis, and so on), premature ejaculation, infertility, LUTS, undescended testicles, urethral lesions and other male genital problems of a benign and malignant nature. The surgical activity is mainly linked to the previous pathologies listed, and therefore penile prosthesis implantology, corporoplasty, urethroplasty, varicocele, orchidopexy, glans biopsy and glanduloplasty, testicular pathologies, penis lengthening and enlargement and other interventions related to pathologies of the reproductive sphere and male genital organs.
