Carl May

Carl May is Professor of Healthcare Innovation at the University of Southampton. Carl is a Sociologist and Social Historian who has researched and published widely across the range of social science research topics in medicine and health care.

His work has examined professional-patient interaction, chronic disease management, the development and implementation of innovative healthcare technologies, and the production and politics of evidence about effective clinical practice. In recent years, this work has focused on developing a richer understanding of complex interventions in health care and of the dynamic processes that underpin technical innovation. Central to this is the development of analyses of the Normalization Processes through which new forms of clinical knowledge and practice are implemented and embedded, and analyses of Burden of Treatment that help us understand how clinical and service innovations are experienced by patients and their families.
