Dr. Freter is a medical graduate of Washington University in St. Louis where he received his medical degree. While there, he also earned a PhD in biochemistry. He completed his internal medicine residency at Stanford University and trained in oncology as a clinical associate at the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD.

Carl E. Freter M.D., Ph.D., FACP has been named director of the division of hematology and oncology, replacing Adrian Di Bisceglie, M.D. and Mark Fesler, M.D., who served as interim division directors. He also will serve as associate director of the SLU Cancer Center.

Freter is a medical graduate of Washington University in St. Louis where he received his medical degree. While there, he also earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He completed his internal medicine residency at Stanford University and trained in oncology as a clinical associate at the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md.

Freter held a faculty appointment at Georgetown University for more than 10 years followed by work in private practice before returning to academic medicine at the University of Missouri. While there, he served as division director of hematology and oncology in the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and held the Nellie B. Smith Chair of Oncology. He maintained a productive laboratory research program.

Freter’s clinical and research interests are in benign and malignant hematology. He has been the recipient of a large number of research grants and contracts from the NIH, industry sponsors and other funding bodies. Freter has published more than 60 papers and book chapters
