Camiel Wijngaarde MD, PhD

During his medical studies at Utrecht University, he became involved in scientific research within the field of muscle diseases, which is being researched extensively in Utrecht. After completing his medical education, he started doctoral research under the supervision of Dr. Ludo van der Pol and Prof. Dr. Leonard van den Berg into the condition Spinal Muscular Atrophy (spinal muscular atrophy), SMA for short. In particular, he focuses on various aspects of the natural course of SMA. In addition, he is also involved in a number of biomarker studies and research into new drugs to better treat the condition. He is combining his Ph.D. research in SMA with the medical specialization of a neurologist.
