Dr. Schauer is half German and half Chinese, was born in Japan, but grew up in Whangarei. He completed his medical training at Auckland University and has practiced in Whangarei, Tauranga, Middlemore, and Auckland City hospitals, including at the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit.
In 2019 he was the first New Zealander to be awarded a fellowship role in Tokyo, Japan, where under the tutelage of Dr. Ken Ohata, a leading world expert, he was able to learn new endoscopic techniques to improve patient comfort performing gastroscopy and colonoscopy, as well as enhanced techniques to pick up subtle abnormalities and methods to accurately diagnose early cancer. If diagnosed early, pre-cancers or cancers may be safely and completely removed without the need for invasive surgery or chemotherapy.
