McIntyre was born in Marietta, OH in 1974. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1997 and 2001, respectively. His doctoral research focused on the biophysics of the interaction between electric fields and neurons. From 2001 to 2003, Dr. McIntyre performed post-doctoral training at Johns Hopkins University and Emory University where he studied deep brain stimulation (DBS).

In 2003 he joined the faculty at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and maintained a laboratory there until 2012. In 2013 the McIntyre lab moved to Case Western Reserve University to create the Case Neuromodulation Center.
