Calvin Q. Pan, MD is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine of the NYU Langone Tisch Hospital, New York University Grossman School of Medicine in New York, USA. Dr. Pan received his MD degree from the State University of New York at Albany. Before joining the faculty at NYU School of Medicine, where he attained the rank of Full Professor of Medicine in 2012, Dr. Pan had held academic positions of Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. Dr. Pan’s research interest is in viral hepatitis. Serving as a senior clinical investigator, he has led numerous clinical trials for Hepatitis B or C. Widely published, Dr. Pan has authored or co-authored more than a hundred and thirty scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. As a leading author, Dr. Pan presented the research works in many high-impact journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Gut, Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology, and American Journal of Gastroenterology. He also serves as a primary writer for the expert consensus guidelines on chronic hepatitis B in the US and the international expert consensus guidelines on vertical transmission of hepatitis B. He currently chairs the writing group of the new hepatitis B practice guidance at the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). He is an associate editor for several peer-reviewed journals, including the World Journal of Hepatology and Liver Research. As an expert and leader in his specialty, Dr. Pan has been invited as a keynote speaker at many international scientific congresses, expert consultant meetings of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Web-CME events.
Besides, Dr. Pan is actively involved in committee work and leadership in many professional organizations. In the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), he is the Chair of the Hepatitis B Special Interest Group and the Past Chair of the Online Learning Committee (2017-2019). He has served on the Membership-Mentor Committee, the Global Outreach-Engagement Committee in AASLD, and as a board member of the Political Action Committee in the American Gastroenterology Association. He also contributed to the work of the following associations and committees: the Education Committee of the American College of Physicians, the International Relationship Committee of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American College of Physicians NY Chapter (as a district councilor), the Association of Chinese American Physicians (vice president, 2010-2012), Committee of the Coalition to Eradicate Viral Hepatitis in the Asia Pacific, and the National Task Force on Hepatitis B in the United States.
Recognized by his colleagues, Dr. Pan has received many awards for his contributions to medical sciences and patient care, including the James D. Bruce Memorial Award for Distinguished Contributions in Preventive Medicine from the American College of Physicians, the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Chinese Society of Infectious Diseases in China, and Certificate of Service Appreciation from the American Cancer Society. He is a Master of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of AASLD, and a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology.
