Dr. Bacon is Professor of Internal Medicine and the inaugural holder of the James F. King MD Endowed Chair in Gastroenterology. He was Director of the Division from 1990 to 2010. He formerly had laboratory-based research interests in hepatic iron metabolism, hepatotoxicity, and development of fibrosis. He currently has active clinical research programs in the area of viral hepatitis.

Dr. Bacon has extensive experience in all aspects of clinical hepatology and has served as the Chair of the GI Board and the Transplant Hepatology Board for the American Board of Internal Medicine and was President of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in 2004. Further, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the AASLD in 2010 for his contributions to the development of hepatology as a distinct discipline. He is currently the Director of Abdominal Transplantation for Saint Louis University Hospital and Co-Director of the Saint Louis University Liver Center.
