Bridie McCarthy attained her general nursing qualification from Whipps Cross Hospital in East London and her midwifery qualification from North Hertfordshire Maternity Hospital, Hertfordshire, UK. Thereafter Bridie McCarthy gained a wide range of experience in general medical and surgical nursing, perioperative nursing (general, plastic, and orthopedic surgery), neurosurgical nursing, neonatal intensive care nursing, and drug and alcohol addiction treatment unit. Before entering her academic career Bridie McCarthy was the Clinical Nurse Manager of a general surgery theatre in a larger teaching hospital.

Bridie McCarthy completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at University College Dublin and Registered as a Nurse Tutor with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Bridie McCarthy completed a BA in counselling with the Cork Institute of Technology, Cork, an MSc in Nursing with the University of Manchester, UK, and Ph.D. in Nursing from University College Cork (UCC).

Since 2002 Bridie McCarthy have been employed as College Lecturer at the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC. Bridie McCarthy currently the Director of undergraduate practice education and lecturer on both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programs. Bridie McCarthy teaching areas are communication skills with undergraduate and postgraduate nursing/midwifery students (in general, midwifery, cancer, palliative care, and nurse prescribing areas), patient and family-centered care in oncology, palliative care, and research principles, and practice. Bridie McCarthy supervise many MSc students and co-supervise Ph.D. students for their research dissertations. Bridie McCarthy has published widely in the International literature.
