Brian Hughes is a Professor in Psychology, and a specialist in stress psychophysiology. He is the author of Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology, Rethinking Psychology: Good Science, Bad Science, Pseudoscience and Psychology in Crisis His research focuses on psychological stress and on psychosocial moderators of stress processes.
Professor Brian Hughes received his PhD and BA degrees from NUI Galway, and an Ed.M. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has held visiting academic appointments at the Universities of Leiden (Netherlands), Birmingham (UK), and Missouri (USA), at King's College London (UK), and at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He served as President of the international Stress and Anxiety Research Society (STAR) from 2014 to 2016. He sits on the editorial boards of a number of international journals of psychophysiology, health psychology, and behavioural medicine, and is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Psychophysiology.
In 2015, he was made a Fellow of the Psychological Society of Ireland (FPsSI) in recognition of his services to Irish psychology. In 2016 he received the Career Contribution Award from the International Council of Stress Management Professionals (ICSMP) "in recognition of positive contribution towards research, development, and application of stress management." In 2007 he received the Early Career Achievement Award from the international Stress and Anxiety Research Society "for scientific achievement in the field of stress and anxiety research", and in 2009 he received a President's Award for Teaching Excellence at NUI Galway.
