Dr. Carter received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Millsaps College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude, completed the Honors Program, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He subsequently graduated from The University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha.

After completing internship at The University of Mississippi Medical Center, Dr. Carter completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas and served as Chief Resident. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Carter has received 5 awards for educational exhibits at national and international conferences, including the Summa Cum Laude for best exhibit at the Third World Congress of Thoracic Imaging in Seoul, South Korea in 2013. He is the author or co-author of 17 peer-reviewed publications, 35 abstracts, and 70 book chapters. Dr. Carter is co-author of the 2nd editions of Diagnostic Imaging: Chest and Diagnostic Imaging: Cardiovascular.

He is a reviewer for RadioGraphics, the Journal of Thoracic Imaging, and the Journal of Computer-Assisted Tomography. Dr. Carter is an Associate Editor for the American College of Radiology’s Case in Point and was Guest Editor of the Society of Thoracic Radiology’s 30th Anniversary Newsletter.
