Brett Hayes is Professor of Psychology at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia.
He is a former Head of the School of Psychology at UNSW, and has held previous appointments at the University of Sydney and the University of Newcastle, and visiting appointments at Northwestern University and New York University, USA. He is currently a member of the Australian Research Council, Australia’s peak funding body for scientific research.
Professor Hayes is internationally recognised for his research in the field of complex cognition. This work encompasses the study of the cognitive processes involved in category learning, categorisation and inductive reasoning, and the development of these abilities during early- and mid-childhood. A key focus of his recent research is uncovering the common and distinctive processes that underlie seemingly disparate cognitive tasks like reasoning and memory. His work in these areas has resulted in two co-authored books and over 80 book chapters and articles in leading international journals.
