Dr. Brendan F. Boyce Director of Anatomic Pathology. An internationally recognized expert in bone biology, osteoporosis, and metabolic bone disease, Dr. Boyce is also a diagnostic surgical pathologist with a sub-specialty interest in bone and soft tissue pathology. He served as Director of Surgical Patholgy from 1999-2007. His research laboratory studies regulatory mechanisms controlling osteoblast and osteoclast function, in particular where there is the potential of opening up new therapeutic pathways for preventing or treating osteoporosis. He was the first to report osteoclast apoptosis in 1996, and has been funded continuously since then to study the osteoclast, which is essential for bone modeling and remodeling and mediates bone loss in common bone diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and postmenopausal osteoporosis.
