Dr. Brenda Poindexter is the director of Clinical and Translational Research for the Perinatal Institute. She has been a PI for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD Neonatal Research Network for more than 10 years and has devoted her career to the conduct of both observational and interventional trials in newborn infants. Her primary research interests relate to the role of early nutrition on growth and developmental outcomes in premature infants.

Dr. Poindexter completed a residency in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s and then fellowship training in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Indiana University. Research training during fellowship began in the laboratory of Dr. Scott Denne, where she received the SPR Fellow’s Clinical Research Award and the Midwest SPR Kenny Trainee Investigator Award for her work related to amino acid metabolism. She was also mentored by Dr. James Lemons as her focus expanded to multicenter clinical trials. While at IU, she also earned a master’s degree in clinical research.
