Dr. Binghui Shen is an established investigator and AAAS fellow in the field of DNA repair and Cancer Biology. He co-discovered the FEN1 structure-specific nuclease family important in DNA replication, repair, and apoptosis DNA fragmentation. Using comprehensive structural and functional analyses and mutation screening, he established a series of knock-in mouse models to elucidate the etiology of FEN1-based cancers. He was the first to establish a mouse model for another structure-specific nuclease, DNA2, and identified its major role in telomere stability and cancer. His group has made the initial observation that DNA2 localizes to the mitochondria and that mutations in DNA2 can cause mitochondrion-based myopathy.
