Bill graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School. After internship, he served with the Peace Corps for two years in Malaysia and one year in Ghana. After completing a family practice residency at the University of Oklahoma, he was in private practice in the Mankato area from 1973 to 1994. During those 20 years, he also spent one year working in a neighborhood health center in Boston, one year in an underserved area of Hawaii, and six months in a squatter village clinic in Kenya, East Africa.In 1988, he authored the book titled Eat For Health: A Do-It-Yourself Nutrition Guide for Solving Common Medical Problems. He was president of the American Holistic Medical Association from 1990 to 1992, and he was a founding member of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. From 1994 to 1996, he was the founding Program Director of Minnesota’s first Rural Family Practice Residency Training Program. From 1997 to 2002, he was a teacher and clinician at the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center. From 1993 to 2003, he was also a co-founder and Medical Director of Open Door Health Center in Mankato, a clinic for the underserved and uninsured.
