Dr Damato was born in Malta. He received his undergraduate medical training at the University of Malta and his post-graduate training at the Glasgow NHS Teaching Hospitals and Glasgow University. His qualifications include: LRCP, MRCS(Eng), FRCS(Ed), PhD(Glasgow), FRCOphth(UK), MD(Malta), FRCS(Glas).
Dr Damato was Senior Lecturer then Reader at Glasgow University; Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Glasgow Western Infirmary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Honorary Clinical Tutor at Liverpool University.
He is currently Professor of Ophthalmology and Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco Honorary Professor of Ophthalmology at Liverpool University and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology and Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Dr Damato's research interests include: treatment of ocular tumors; molecular biology of ocular melanomas; estimating survival probability in patients with ocular melanoma; and oculo-kinetic perimetry. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, 60 reviews, 50 book chapters and 6 books, one as single author.
