Dr. Bernhard Michalke, Ph.D. is a Senior Scientist and Principal Investigator at the Helmholtz Center Munich. Michalke studied biology at the Technical University of Munich and received his doctorate there in 1988. He has been teaching at the "Institute for Analytical Chemistry and Food Chemistry" at the Technical University of Graz since 1996, where he habilitated in 1999 in the subject of analytical chemistry. Since 2004 he has been President of the Society for Minerals and Traces Elements (GMS) and since 2007 also President of the European umbrella organization of trace element societies "Federation of European Societies on Trace Elements and Minerals" (FESTEM) and "Fellow" of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Prof. Michalke's research focuses on the elucidation of bonding forms of the elements (element species) in the broad problem area of ​​"environmental diseases". Among other things, he has written more than 120 peer-reviewed articles, he is involved in various national and international scientific organizations, eg leading the organization of 4 "International Conferences on Trace Element Speciation", and in the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology and the Journal of Environmental Monitoring.
