Basil Lewis, MD, FRCP, FACC, FESC, FAHA, FCCP, is director of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Clinical Cardiovascular Research Center,Lady Davis Carmel Medical Center, Haifa, Israel, and Louis Edelstein Professor of Medicine and Medical Research, Ruth and Bruce Rappaport School of Medicine,Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa. He was born in 1946 in the small town of Springs, South Africa. His father, a businessman who grew up between the 2 World Wars, found it impossible to study medicine. The next generation had more opportunities—everyone finished high school and went to university—and the younger Lewis decided to pursue his father’s dream.
